The Vanessa Pollock Realty Team of Keller Williams Midtown Direct was proud to present a donation “matching” check of $2500 to the Achieve Foundation yesterday.  The Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative, in partnership with the Achieve Foundation, launched a community-wide fundraising campaign in August. The goal was to raise $2500, which the VP Realty Team would match, in order to raise a total of $5000.  Vanessa and Charlie Pollock, along with Director of Marketing for the VP team Bonnie Ramsey presented the check to Deborah Prinz and Robin Peacock of the Achieve Foundation, with James Munno Fine Arts Director for the SOMSD also present.  The Awards Ceremony for the 2016-2017 Scholarship recipients will take place on October 27th at CHS and the entire community is invited to attend and celebrate the students.

November 2015

Achieve Foundation’s 1st Annual Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative Awards Ceremony

For Immediate Release – November 5, 2015

Proud families and teachers gathered in the SO/M Schools’ District Meeting Room on November 2, to watch seven accomplished high school musicians receive the inaugural awards from the Achieve Foundation’s Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative. Each award was tailored to the specific needs of these gifted students . Some received new professional grade instruments:  a trombone, a clarinet and a violin. Others received funding for private instruction over the course of this school year.

The awards, totaling $10,500, were provided through the initiative established with the Achieve Foundation by Charlie and Vanessa Pollock. Vanessa’s Keller Williams Realty Team in Maplewood are committed to giving back to the community they serve in significant ways, including the music initiative, for which they raise funds at rousing concerts featuring Charlie and other Broadway performers.

At the awards ceremony, Vanessa Pollock spoke of the pleasure and confidence that she and her husband derived from their own performing arts training, which each of them began as children. She stressed the importance of enabling all young performers to pursue the arts vigorously, whether, like Charlie, they become professional actors, or they choose other vocational paths, as she ultimately did. In addition to the awards, the Pollock Initiative also benefited students at all SO/M schools, paying for instrument repairs, rentals for students with financial need and Achieve Teacher Grants for music projects.

CHS Band Director, Peter Bauer, Choral Director, Jamie Bunce and Orchestra Director, Todd Van Beveren nominated the students for the Pollock awards, because of their extraordinary achievements in music to date. They distinguished themselves with their effort, dedication and musicianship. The instruments and instruction funded by the awards also afford opportunities which would otherwise not be affordable to the recipients.

Mara Rubin, SO/M Supervisor of Fine Arts and Performing Arts, thanked the Achieve Foundation for its role in creating the Pollock Music Initiative and spoke graciously about the Pollocks and their appreciation for the value of music education. “I want to take this moment to thank you all for the time and generosity that you have given to the music students in the South Orange/Maplewood School District. These awards are a true testament to what the Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative stands for, and why I take my job so seriously. Making a difference in students’ lives through the arts is life–changing. I am thrilled to continue this important work together.”

Principal Elizabeth Aaron expressed thanks on behalf of Columbia High School before presenting the awards to recipients, Jessica Brice, Aanu Fawole, Ahmad Holiday, Autumn Jones, Louise Kern-Kensler, Lauren Kret and Isaiah Thomas. For more information on the initiative or the upcoming “Charlie Pollock and Friends” concert on Monday evening, December 14 in the CHS auditorium, go to achievefoundation.org or VanessaPollock MusicInitiative.com.

The Achieve Foundation is a non-profit organization that raises funds to promote exemplary, innovative public education for all students and educators in the School District of South Orange and Maplewood.
