As we wrap up the 2022–2023 school year, it‘s time to celebrate the remarkable scholarship recipients of the Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative. Eileen Neri, Executive Director of the Achieve Foundation and superstar VPMI volunteer Joan Ragno, recently organized a “meet & greet” for the VPMI scholarship recipients, High School music teachers, and Vanessa & Charlie Pollock.

Over pizza and cookies, the group was all able to share their experiences of the last school year by having better music instruments, and private music instruction. Mr. Manno, supervisor of the arts for the South Orange Maplewood school district came into the room and asked some really pointed questions. He got the kids talking about the impact that the initiative had made on their lives and we all realized, yet again, how grateful we are that the community fundraisers along with us to bring this music initiative to life. Vanessa was able to share about growing up as dancer and how that work ethic had paid off within her career, and how Charlie’s work ethic landed him on Broadway half a dozen times.

She shared how grateful they both are to the teachers who pour into the students on a daily basis. Vanessa made sure that the students knew that it is the teachers who deserved a big thank you for having nominated each of them. It is the teachers who see the spark in each of these students, and then it is the music initiative that merely helps light that spark up even further! In the end, Vanessa asked the students for feedback on ways that music education could be improved for all the students in the school district. The students really appreciated being asked for their feedback, and a lively discussion ensued.

Out of that discussion, what emerged was a shopping list for the percussion/drum line for the marching band, the need for more music stands, changes to the travel bus, and more. We’re excited for the music teachers to take these ideas and apply for the teacher grants, awarded annually by the Achieve Foundation. Achieve is a remarkable nonprofit for the South Orange Maplewood school district that provided private funds for public education. They are committed to access, equity and excellence for all, and being partners to the Vanessa Pollock Music Initiative has been a true gift! Thank you to everyone who has donated to Achieve and the VPMI over the years, thank you to the teachers for another successful school year, and thank you readers and clients and community for your love and support of Pollock Properties group as always!!
